Your baby's crib is the most important piece of furniture in his (or her) room. Other pieces of baby furniture can be improvised from other types of furniture but the crib is its own entity. You will probably spend more time shopping for your baby crib than any other piece of furniture that you will ever buy. After all, you don't want to spend more money than you can afford but you also want your baby to be safe, comfortable and secure! After all, this is where your baby will spend quite a lot of time!

There are a few different types of cribs that you can choose for your baby. Most people are familiar with cribs that have one side that will drop down but there are also cribs that have both sides drop down and cribs that do not have drop sides at all. Still other cribs will convert into toddler beds. If your family is on a limited budget, you may want to consider buying your baby a convertible crib so that you won't need to buy another bed for him until he is ready for a "regular" sized bed.

When you are shopping for your baby's crib, here are a few things that you will want to watch for:

Make sure that the slats on the baby's crib have, at most, two and a half inches between them.

Make sure that the side of the crib that drops down will be at least two feet above the mattress when that side of the crib is up and no less than nine inches above the crib's mattress when that side of the drib is dropped down.

Be sure that the side that drops down has a locking mechanism that will remain secure and that is difficult to unlatch.

Get a mattress for your baby that will fit snugly into the bottom of the crib. You should not be able to get more than two of your fingers between the edge of the mattress and the side of the crib.

Double check to ensure that the crib you buy for your baby will not have any sharp corners, rough edges, unfinished pieces or peeling paint.

You should be able to attach the mattress for your baby to each side of the crib.

A good way to make sure that you have all of your bases covered and that your baby sleeps in a beautiful and functional crib is to find a crib that has wooden sides but a metal mattress support mechanism. The mattress support pad should be adjustable so that as your baby gets bigger, the mattress can be lowered to prevent your baby from climbing out of his crib.

The fact is that you want your baby to be safe and secure when he is put in his crib for his naps and to go to sleep at night. You want your baby to be comfortable and you don't want to have to worry about any accidents or potential injuries! Take your time to make sure you make the right decision!

Baby Backpacks

Baby backpacks can be configured so you can carry your baby in different places on your body. Until the baby can hold its head up on its own it needs to be carried in the front. After the baby is able to hold its head up then you can carry the baby facing forward, on your hip or in a backpack.

You need to choose a good quality backpack carrier in order to do this and keep the infant close and comfortable. Most of the baby backpacks can carry babies up to ages two or three or up to forty pounds.

The baby backpacks are great to allow you to have your arms and hand free to do other things while you are still able to be close to your infant.

You can continue to do your housework, talk on the phone, type on your computer, do your laundry, pack groceries and tote another child if needed to and your baby is still content because it is still close to you. Your baby backpack is also good for outdoor activities like shopping, hiking or just walking.

Some baby backpacks carriers come with five point or three point harnesses, toy loops, bottle holders, diaper bag, and weather canopy. You want to make sure your baby backpack is washable because your baby is bound to get it dirty. Check to see if the baby backpacks have sturdy metal or plastic frames, extra padding on the straps for your comfort, and a very soft seat for your baby.

Learning to use the baby backpack will take some practice but the first thing you want to do is get it adjusted around your body to fit snuggly so your baby won’t topple out.

With the baby backpack the weight is spread across your shoulders and back and not just concentrated on one area of your body while packing your infant. Some of the baby backpacks have a waist harness that will evenly spread the weight out even more through your upper body.

Make sure the baby backpack that you are considering is easy to put on and take off by yourself. Most of the baby backpacks have adjustable straps to get it to fit you comfortably and you will know that the baby is snug as a bug in a rug.

A baby backpack is much better than a stroller because you don’t get your feet tangled in the stroller wheels, you can go over rough terrain, the child can see so much better, and you know your child is safer in a large crowd because they are connected to you.

Be sure to check if the baby falls asleep while in the baby backpack vertically, can the baby be moved to a horizontal position to lay them down without trying to remove them from the baby backpack. Every caregiver and parent should have a baby backpack in order to be able to enjoy the closeness of the infant but be able to do other things also.
